I enjoyed this book. It isn't the style of my usual reads, but it had a way of holding your attention and beckoning you to turn the page. The story is one that so many women have faced, and in that sense it was familiar. And yet it was a story I was glad to see to the end regardless.
I wish we could have seen a glimpse into the life of the last child in the book. To know if her fate could be better. But it still feels complete.

I wish I could give this book a higher rating. The writing was good, and the story had potential. But the emphasis on pregnancy & rape killed the entire plot for me. I understand that the author wanted to emphasize the connection between mothers and daughters, but I think that can be accomplished in different ways.

There are two pregnancies in this book, both the result of rape. The descriptions of assault & abortions are graphic as well.

Look, I’m the first person to say that I don’t mind feminist books that paint men to be evil. But there are other stories to tell besides the torture, abuse, and assault of women.

This was not a story of witches and nature as much as it was a story about the generational and societal cycles of abuse. I was uncomfortable throughout this entire book, so while it was well-written, I can’t recommend it.

A tale of three women over three different time periods interwoven by being Weyward. The changing of character each chapter kept the story fresh and moving forwards, I wanted to get back to each of the three women and hear more of their story. The touches of historical moments is subtle but beautifully done. Fans of Stacey Halls would enjoy this novel as I felt similarities with The Familiars as I flew through the pages.

I had high expectations because this was the Goodreads Choice Awards Book of the Year (2023)—perhaps too high.  It was a good book, but I felt the three good storylines were one too many.  With stories set in the 1600s, 1940s, and the present day, the story constantly jumped around.  If I had been able to read it in one sitting, it might have worked.

This book was incredibly sad and beautiful. I love how the author connected these women together throughout the book. To see each women’s growth and finding freedom despite men trying to cage them is inspiring. I think everyone woman could relate to something that was mentioned today.

Three women get abused throughout time. That’s it that’s the book.
