I enjoyed this novel a lot. It kept me engaged. I found all three of the main characters very likable and the way their stories were interwoven was done very nicely. It was fun figuring out the mystery of the family even if it was a little obvious at time. My main critique is the lack of witchcraft. The main characters are supposed to be witches but sometimes it felt like they had superpowers rather than being witches. I understand why the author chose to make them witches considering that this book has feminist themes but I wish they incorporated more witchy elements.

I keep reading reviews talking about how it’s unrealistic that three different women in the family suffered from abuse or sexual assault. It is estimated that 1 in 3 women have experienced sexual violence and 3 in 10 women have experienced domestic violence. These statistics are believed to be even higher than reported. I’d also make the assumption that these occurrences were even more common in the past. So, can you really call three women in a family over the course of several centuries experiencing these things unrealistic? While these topics are incredibly hard to read about, I really enjoyed this book. I personally felt that it was empowering, but I understand that it can be too much for others.

This was a slow and challenging read as I tend to prefer a faster pace and more lighthearted / fantastical plot. However, I am so glad I stuck it out as the ending was really inspiring and thought-provoking and held up a mirror to motherhood and relationships. 

I think all baby mamas should read this book 🙌
