This book follows three different generations of women through separate timelines. Each are, unfortunately, relatable in their own way.

At times the story reads like three separate thrillers as you want to know the outcome for each of the women.

Whilst not necessarily feminist literature this book does highlight the power women hold and how this is only intensified when women are united. A beautifully written book that can easily be enjoyed, despite its heavy content.

I read Weyward by Emilia Hart for my book club's October selection. Initially, the first 100 pages were a struggle; I found them slow and hard to engage with, and it took some effort to keep going. However, I’m so glad I didn’t give up, as the story truly opened up after that, drawing me into the lives of the three main characters. Their development and the way their stories connected kept me invested.

The themes of strong, resilient women standing up against a patriarchal society were both powerful and inspiring, and Hart’s atmospheric writing added depth to the experience. Although this was quite different from what I expected, I’m glad I read it and would recommend it to others. I would, however, suggest checking trigger warnings beforehand, as the book does contain some difficult and dark content.

Not spooky witches. More about women and their connection to each other and nature, so if you’re looking for Halloween vibes, this isn’t it.

This was fine, honestly very average overall, but a quick read. I thought the writing was good, especially for a debut novel, and I liked how it wove together the three women’s stories even if it was a bit predictable at times. It was definitely super light on the magical realism/witchy aspects, I kind of wanted more from that. As someone who is not a fan of pregnancy in books, this just had a bit too much of it for me to ever enjoy my time with it, and some of the descriptions really got under my skin. It also just started to feel a little overwhelming with the amount of trauma these women went through, like it literally just kept getting progressively worse as the book went on, and all the women in this story went through an absurd amount of trauma and the men depicted were the actual worst examples on the planet. It’s a pet peeve of mine when I feel like authors use trauma as the ONLY plot device and only way to develop their characters (it happens with women and people of color all the time) and I just think there are much better stories to tell and women are so much more than their trauma.
