I am conflicted about this book. Part way through I almost decided not to finish it. The story itself is interesting (although there is a lot of trigger warnings) but many times I felt that the story was too stagnant. I found myself glossing over many pages, which I rarely do (particularly in part two, and particularly about Violet). I think the book could have been edited a lot better.
I also agree with another reviewer who stated they wished the witchiness was more apparent from the beginning, rather than being revealed at the very end.
While I am glad I finished it, paradoxically, I wish I never started it to begin with.

The narrative jumps between three women from different eras: one from the 1600s, another growing up post-WWII, and one from 2019. These types of stories have been told before—raw, powerful, and meaningful in other works—but here, crammed together, they lose their impact. The characters become shallow caricatures, and the men are portrayed just as flatly, as villains with no depth.

This book contains a lot of triggering, hard-to-read content. I found the content overwhelming and discomforting, and the characters didn't engage me at all. The discomfort wasn’t justified by any deeper message or useful commentary. I already know that men have historically treated women terribly—I don't need a book to remind me of that. The idea of empowering vengeance felt like a fairytale—real abused women don’t have supernatural forces to protect or avenge them. It made the empowerment feel hollow.

To market this book as historical fiction with witchcraft and fantasy elements feels misleading. The fantasy aspect is just a gimmick to attract readers to an otherwise disturbing and unnecessary story.

At first, I didn’t think I was going to like this book, but I slowly fell in love with the characters and what they were trying to say. Essentially, the book is about three women in the same bloodline who have suffered at the hands at men but discovered their own nature magic to help them. Though the book comes with a lot of trigger warnings, it’s important to note that these women are strong not because of their circumstances but in spite of them. They find strength in their connection to each other and other women. I liked the vivid details of the story, especially as the women connect with nature, though I really am not a bug person myself. I like the revenge the women took on the men (or justice perhaps?) and I like the circular ending. I think it was a bit slow, and perhaps there could have been more details with the women outside of their experiences with men and magic, but otherwise I did enjoy it.

This book was a phenomenal read.  The three storylines were expertly woven together, showing us women across centuries taking back their power. This book deals with some tough topics. Please read trigger warning before picking up this book as I neglected to do.
