I think if I was in a different mood/headspace I would have enjoyed this book more. It was very tense and melancholic, so I felt a lack of hope for the first 65% of the book. That made it hard to read and enjoy. The writing style was also a little off for me, lots of beautiful prose juxtaposed against some really stilted sentence structure. Since I was listening to the audiobook I noticed that. I liked the themes and seeing three different witches and how their heritage affected their lives, but this wasn’t my favorite type of story. Lots of on page trauma and triggers, so be aware of that.

At first, I didn’t think I was going to like this book, but I slowly fell in love with the characters and what they were trying to say. Essentially, the book is about three women in the same bloodline who have suffered at the hands at men but discovered their own nature magic to help them. Though the book comes with a lot of trigger warnings, it’s important to note that these women are strong not because of their circumstances but in spite of them. They find strength in their connection to each other and other women. I liked the vivid details of the story, especially as the women connect with nature, though I really am not a bug person myself. I like the revenge the women took on the men (or justice perhaps?) and I like the circular ending. I think it was a bit slow, and perhaps there could have been more details with the women outside of their experiences with men and magic, but otherwise I did enjoy it.

Weyward was an enjoyable read, that was engaging to read, however was a bit of an easy read and felt the writing stylistically similar to a YA novel (content is definitely NOT YA as there are so many content warnings!)

I enjoyed the intergenerational stories and how the three stories built off each-other and interwove with one another.

Magical realism elements contrasted harsh, dark, and traumatic moments. Which there are many of. Trauma felt like a slight crutch of the book, but the story of Kate brought hope and conclusion to cycles of abuse.

I didn’t love the focus on birth, motherhood, and lineage. However I am not a mother. I was more drawn to the resilience and spirit of the strong women characters.
