Entrancing book and concept.

Lost a star from me because the r*pe scene halfway through was unnecessarily detailed and descriptive.

I feel like in this day and age, we have many tools and resources that we don’t need scenes such as this one mentioned to be written on the page, or worse, recorded audibly.

There’s hundreds of ways this scene could have unfolded to make the reader understand what happened without triggering readers and survivors with such graphic details.

Other than the graphic scenes and descriptions, and the lack of trigger warnings, I rather enjoyed this book. It’s difficult to look back on it in a positive light because some of its scenes are so triggering, dark, and contrast the other themes of this novel greatly.

If you do decide to read this book, I highly suggest reading up on the triggers before hand so you know what you’re getting yourself into. Beware of the halfway mark and Violet’s chapters.

I'm so torn between a rating of 4 or 5 for this book, but considering it's the first book in ages I've stayed up reading, it's probably a 5. It's taken me a day to process the story of these 3 Weyward women and how their individual stories and lives link to the wider story. The themes travel through time splendidly, and each chapter was so perfectly timed with the others, alternating between the 3 women nearly equally and showing them all at the age of 'becoming a Weyward woman' despite the difference at age. I think the power of women was sometimes not given enough credit and could have been portrayed better as the main theme of the book.
I also wonder if more books like this should have a trigger warning as the chapters on domestic violence and rape were hard to read, and this wasn't hinted at in the blurb or anywhere else pre-reading.

The prose was very beautiful and raw at points, particularly in the perspective of Kate, describing her experience with domestic abuse. But much of Violet and Altha’s stories are told in a way that feels very young adult, which felt discordant with the very violent and emotional content…like the quote on the front “they call us witches…we call ourselves weyward” was so Wattpad lmao.

I didn’t think the witch theme was explored enough for the amount of suspense built up throughout the book about what that entailed…I think delving more into the ways the women used their powers aside from just punishing the men would have better served the message the author seemed to be sending about finding empowerment from within—rather than from a man. Because the culmination of each woman’s journey was finding their power through hurting abusers, it decentered their personal journeys to emancipation and refocused the way they found freedom on the involvement of men.

I picked up Weyward for book club and it was just not my jam. It's dark, sad, tense, unhappy, full of strife and way way more rape than I want to ever read about, both in mentions and in graphic detail. There just weren't many redeeming happy moments to make up for all the darkness. There was a bit of good revenge which we're definitely here for, but otherwise it was just women being beaten down for nearly the 11 hour audiobook.

The discussion for Weyward during book club was interesting, as the majority of people thoroughly enjoyed this novel and I was glad to hear their perspectives and what they took from the book. And although I didn't like it, it was immensely readable. The audiobook is narrated by three different narrators, one for each of the three main characters of the book, and it was easy to continue reading to (for me) hope something nice happens to someone eventually.

This book tells the stories of three women along the same family line, separated by hundreds of years. Each of the women were extra connected to nature, able to connect with animals, bugs and birds as well as heal with herbs and other plants. Each one of them had to deal with difficult people, cruel men, and heartbreaking situations. Of course there were accusations of witchcraft. Men need to be happy women are just looking for equality and not revenge, because we have suffered so much over the years.
