I received this book as a review copy from Hachette India quite some time back. And though I quite enjoy Keigo Higashino’s works, I dawdled for as long as I could before picking it up to read it because my prior experience with this author’s works meant that I knew I would have to pay really close attention to every little aspect in the book.
A dead body is discovered at an abandoned building and Detective Sasagaki is assigned the case. The body is identified to be that of a pawnbroker. As the detective investigates the case, he is introduced to two characters - Ryo, the son of the pawnbroker and Yukiho, the daughter of the lady who seemed to have been in a relationship with the pawnbroker. The case remains unsolved through the detective’s career, but it becomes sort of an obsession for the detective. As a result, he continues to keep tabs on Ryo and Yukiho and the book follows the incidents of almost two decades. Does Sasagaki ever get the satisfaction of solving this case? Or are the perpetrators just a bit too clever for him?
As expected, the book doesn’t conform to the general mystery format. Most of the seasoned mystery readers will be certain about the ‘who’ in the plot. But just like ‘The Devotion of Suspect X’ the book is all about the other aspects of the case – the why, where, and how’s of the case. It is a rollercoaster journey and the genius of it just left me amazed. Detective Sasagaki’s dedication towards this case is admirable as is the intelligence of the perpetrators. The plot is multi layered and there is so much going on that it keeps the readers engrossed. The twists and turns keep the readers on their toes. The best part of the book is perhaps its climax when the twisted plot finally unravels to disclose every little secret. The author doesn’t leave anything unanswered.
This is a huge book but I managed to read it within two days lest I forget some important little detail. It is certainly a page turner.

I think the fact that you know who's behind all of these things 1/3(ish) in makes the book so insufferable to read (but like in a good way). Just felt like entering the book and telling everyone who is behind it all.

Từ đầu đến cuối tác giả đều không kể về bất cứ sự liên lạc hay gặp mặt nào của cả 2. Người đọc chỉ tự mình nhận ra sự liên kết đó sau khi những vụ án hay tội ác xảy ra.

Khoảng gần cuối truyện, dù cho người đồng nghiệp cho rằng Yukiho là 1 cô gái xinh đẹp, thông minh, tài giỏi có một hôn nhân hạnh phúc. Nhưng cô cho rằng đời mình chưa bao giờ sống trong ánh sáng của mặt trời, nhưng có một thứ vẫn luôn là mặt trời soi rọi cho cô. Còn về Ryoji, nam chính, anh luôn làm mọi chuyện xấu để kiếm tiền, từ việc mại dâm, làm giả phần mềm, giả thẻ tính dụng, ăn cắp thông tin mật hay thậm chí giết người. Mõi một hành động đều được lên kế hoạch một cách tỉ mỉ. Tất cả mọi thứ để liều mạng kiếm tiền, về sau tất cả số tiền đều để Yukiho có thể sống dưới ánh mặt trời rực rỡ. Nhưng tất cả những hành động xấu đó đều là sự hợp tác tài tình của cả 2. Cảnh sát Sasagaki đã ví mối liên hệ của 2 người như cá và tôm pháo. I want to block everyone who remotely likes this book, which is an idea normally I wouldn’t even consider, that’s how furious I’m with this book.
Ein sehr schönes Krimi, die Geschickt so gebaut dass, das langsam wie eine Lawine wird, die dich überwältigt. Die einzige Schwierigkeit sind die vielen Charaktere mit japanischen Namen, die ein bisschen wie jeder andere für einen Gaijin aussehen.
Un giallo molto bello, costruito sapientemente e che piano piano diventa come una valanga che ti travolge. Unica difficoltà i tanti personaggi con i nomi giapponesi che si somigliano un po' tutti per un gaijin.

i’m having mixed feelings. i don’t understand what the author was trying to do with choosing to end the book like this. was he trying to get the readers to sympathize with the villains?? it’s unclear. i feel like that’s the issue with telling us their motives right at the end. i feel like he ended the book a bit too early.
plus the way he writes his female characters is pretty bad. i was second guessing myself, thinking that maybe he’s trying to depict how women in the 1960’s thru 80s don’t have many choices back then, but then i saw other reviews of his other books and yeah, turns out this is a pattern of his.
at the same time though, i want to give it a few stars since i couldn’t put the book down after 20 pages. and this is the first mystery book i’ve ever read and it most definitely made me want to read more mysteries.
i don’t think i’ll ever reread this though. i feel like the sexual violence in this book is gratuitous at times and it’s pretty graphic.it doesn’t help that we don’t see the victims getting any justice in the end either, so the ending feels so unfulfilling.
