abashton's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH

Could not get into

Cuốn này nặng về tâm lý xã hội hơn là trinh thám, mối quan hệ giữa các nhân vật trong truyện nó cứ mờ mờ ảo ảo, vừa đọc vừa đoán nhưng cuốn hút không dứt ra được.

3.5

Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Not as satisfying a read as the other Keigo books because there are so many characters in this book that I got quite confused at times. But still a notch above the typical western whodunnit. Keigo never disappoints!

This was far more a story about the two young people at the heart of the book than about the original murder. There is a wide cast of characters (I wished I'd kept a list!), many of whom are largely incidental. The core of the book (at least 300 pages) is about the lives of young people in Japan - in school, college, business and life - in the 1980s and 1990s. There's a quite interesting backdrop of the development of technology, and some nice period details. I found this quite interesting, but it's not really what I expected from a murder mystery. Higashino is a skillful writer though.

Keigo Higashino never disappoints me. It has an unexpected ending and this book also taught me that there is always two sides of a story. Indeed pain definitely change us for better or worse.

I don't think I have ever read a crime novel so epic in scope. The story spans 19 years beginning with the murder of a man in an abandoned building.

Higashino is masterful in subtly dropping clues that alerts the reader to what is going on:
Spoilerthe tinkling of a bell in a girl's pocket; a borrowed pregnancy test. The "who" is revealed quite early on and it becomes the question of "why". The ultimate is reveal is shocking and tragic just like the ending.
