I bought the book many many years ago, but had been postponing reading it because I did not like the movie adaptation (the one with Horikita Maki) of it. After watching the movie, I was left disturbed and felt like I did not want to revisit the story ever. Well, even though so many years have gone by since then, the images still remained in my memory, like scars that won’t heal. But now that I am an adult, I thought I could take the unsavoury parts a little better than I could before. Plus, I was out of Japanese mystery books to read at the time.
Let me just drop some trigger warnings before I begin my review: rape, sexual assaults, underage sexual relations and rape, paedophilia, violence, graphic sexual descriptions and cheating. So, you can understand my disgust.
That being said though, the story was well-written and the translation was by Alexander O. Smith, so it sounded pretty natural. It follows multiple POVs over 20 years where a lot of homicides and other crimes occurred. They all seemed to have a link but it was hard to prove.
I would recommend this book to mystery lovers who could stomach the trigger warnings mentioned above. It still made for a remarkable read. But I could only rate it 4.5 stars.

Vì truyện thật sự rất dài, mỗi chương lại là một phần đời của nhân vật, nên thực sự có rất nhiều tên nhân vật phải nhớ, nhiều những tiểu tiết phải chú ý để có thể đưa ra kết luận.
Kết truyện, các cụ án có thể xem như đều đã có lời giải, nhưng đối với mình vẫn là một cái kết mở. Cảm giác shock không thể so với Phía sau nghi can X nhưng vẫn khiến mình "ngợp" trong không khí sách. Khi đọc đến đoạn cuối của sách mình đã thật sự tưởng tượng ra trước mắt khung cảnh ấy, những nhân vật ấy và đến giờ vẫn ám ảnh về sự lạnh lùng vô tính của Yukiho.

It had the bones of a really interestingly structured story where different incidents around two seemingly unconnected peoples' lives slowly elucidate the circumstances of the original murder.
I would really really appreciate such carefully plotted out information control but it’s hampered by two big problems. a) the book is way too long for this type of slow information reveal; a lot of the connections are missed by the reader not for lack of paying attention, but because it's buried in a bunch of other stuff that by the time you actually reach the moment you’re supposed to make the connections between the information it’s already been like a good 200pgs. b) The story regrettably plays into a really harmful stereotype about SA survivors. Please be conscious of this when reading.

Tanti, troppi personaggi che si intrecciano di continuo con molte, troppe sottotrame in una vicenda che si trascina per numerose, troppe pagine (o, nel mio caso, minuti).
Il giallo avvince ma perde mordente per la lentezza della narrazione e la lunghezza del libro. Inevitabilmente, l'autore ha finito per lasciare fili sciolti che escono dall'ordito.
Apprezzabile la versione audio, con la buona interpretazione di Marco Di Giorgio.

You know a murder mystery novel is good when you end up sympathising with the murderer instead of the victim(s).

A dark, dark story, more like a noir movie than a typical mystery novel. That said, it just goes on way too long and is too deep in descriptions. I get what he was going for, and I do understand why people love it, but I had to start skimming at several points.
