I won't be able to say it as well as some of the other reviewers, but I was disappointed in the lack of clear conclusions. Lots of the information was vague assumptions. She also stated one point, regards to spanking that she had a bias. However it seemed pretty clear throughout the book that she was biased on other things. I felt like she left out a lot of factors she should have considered when looking into the research, just because I had heard different explanations that she did not touch on, so it felt like a kind of rushed summary. Overall I can't say it taught me anything new, which says a lot for somebody who has not done a particularly large amount of research.
I think I would have enjoyed it more as a first-time mom. Everything is pretty much summed up as “the data says this but you should ultimately do what’s best for your family” which is the conclusion I have come to after 4 years and 2 kids. It was interesting to hear about the data and think of things through a different lens. Definitely recommend for first-time parents to think critically about the decisions they will have to make.
Wish I read this book when I was pregnant…such helpful info about a little bit of everything. I love data and so does Emily Oster which made for a great read :) I will definitely pick up her book on pregnancy when I’m walking that road again!

This book could never have been as good as her first book, because parenting involves a LOT more “what works for your family and preferences” than pregnancy. Still, I enjoyed it. She’s funny and tries very hard to be unbiased, and I like data. I have six kids, and I just mentioned how I enjoy data, so not much here was new, but it’s a good presentation. If I’d read this instead of No Cry Sleep Solution with my first, I’d have cried less while imagining him withering away in his own crib, abandoned and alone, and made more rational decisions. This far in, I’m pretty comfortable with my parenting (and I’ve got my own data - 6 isn’t a good sample size but there does seem to be a genetic or expectations component), but I’m still glad I read it.
Interesting read but I wasn't completely convinced of all of her findings.

Good early parenting/ early childhood information based on the data. Found it interesting.
It was good - it was confusing why an economist was the right person to write this book. Almost nothing has evidence for it. So I suppose it's reassuring that decisions can be made for whatever will work for our family.
