I really liked the premise of this book. The idea behind it was really neat. However I just didn’t care for Etta enough to truly care for her journey. To me it is the great base for a story. Just not fully flushed out that much. I may not be the intended audience for this book

Great potential. Great ideas. The amateur prose? It’s brutal. It is all I can do to keep my review from being brutal. The nicest I can do quote Dr.Smith from Lost In Space, “Oh, the pain! The pain!”

Official Review:
This book was so good!! However, this book would have been a 5 star if it was a series. The idea of the gifted and ungifted is not unique by any means. However, if the book was a series it would have done better at explaining the different types of gifts and the variation that each gift has. It would have also been helpful and beneficial if it was series because there are different areas in the world but they aren’t explained in the way they could have been if it was a series. The story line and the idea is there for sure and the book was not terrible but it wasn’t fantastic either. This would have benefited from a series. If it did not feel so rushed at the end this might have been a pick for book club.

I hate this book. I understand it’s a fantasy but it could stand to be a little more realistic. It’s also pretty unoriginal. Young girl, no father, ailing mother, a problem only she could solve with her unique powers, a boy she falls in love with while on a mission to solve said problem, surprise!! daddy’s still alive and now she has a family whereas before she had none...I think you get my point. Maybe I’m just too cynical but I basically eye rolled my way through this book.
There was enough going on in this book that it kept me interested, but the whole thing felt rushed and contrived. This really needed to either be a longer book or a series. The author rushed to put so much into the story building and then everything settled in ways that were just too neat. Overall, it was a great concept and I enjoyed the idea.
I'll admit this book started a little bit slow for me, but it definitely turned around and I found I didn't want to put it down. I personally don't agree with the reviews complaining of the pacing. It takes place over the span of like five to seven days. Most of which were travel filled. Do you really want to hear about the grueling details of travel?
I really enjoyed the character growth and the plot twists in The Memory Thief. And, of course, I loved the concept of a magic system involving memories. It definitely made me tear up a few times! Solid four star read, will be looking forward to future works of Lauren's.
