I respect this book for what it accomplished being a debut. It reads on the young side of YA but has some dark moments sprinkled in which are needed to break up the at times quiet light, easy, low steaks feeling parts. I like that the “romance” in this is very light and the plot is the driving force. Some good twists in here that I didn’t see coming and some that were predictable from the start. All in all I had a good time and sped through this book. A good option for people transitioning from middle grade to YA fantasy.

The memory thief got a lot fanfare during BookCon, so I requested a copy to see what the hype was all about. This book took me 4 months to finish. It was a tedious read that I often put down to move on to something else. The writing was a middle of the road MG style, and it was not the kind I would rave about. I was really disappointed in this novel. The plot was slow paced and disorganized, at times leaving holes that were very obvious. For me, this novel landed at a 2/5 stars.

3.0

Probably closer to a 2.5 if I'm honest. I've got a full review planned that I'll write up this weekend, but: I feel like this was a great concept with really interesting characters and it just didn't live up to its potential.

Edit: You can find my full review here but beware of spoilers!!

An intriguing concept, but I wish a successful fantasy writer would take it on and rewrite it. This one gives me the same feel as reading The Boom Eaters: not yet fully resolved. Etta’s journey seems far too easy - everyone she meets is won over and coincidentally willing to help. A little more challenge and a little more complexity would transform this novel into a great fantasy story.

This was a nice story about a girl and her love of her mother. I enjoyed listening the story and found it easy to follow.

Very interesting world, loved the beginning. But everything became too good to be true towards the end. The tone of the book in the first half was drastically different from the second half

very interesting but woefully average
