[read in the German translation by Ursel Allenstein]
I really appreciated this book. It's very philosophical, more of a character study of all the complicated aspects of a family than about the plot. It was fascinating to see how the different characters viewed themselves, their relatives and the same conversations. It really shows how egocentric all humans are.
What I did not like was the way direct speech was conveyed. I find this style of integrating it into the text without marking it somehow very confusing.

This book was a hard read. There was no names used so it was always "A Grandfather who's a son and has a son" which began making my poor brain get very confused. The writing style was lovely but it was just too much. It's flowery and felt like a book seeking a reward, and I just didn't enjoy it. I got too confused and barely made my way through it. I'm sure other readers will love it, but man... it was not for me.

One out of five stars.

I'm wondering if there was some linguistic wordplay elements 'lost in translation', as the common use of "the [family role] who is a [another role]" phrasing is creative but yet lacking some punch, and even got somewhat tiresome as the plot seemed to meander quite a long while. The climax somewhat salvaged things, though the feminist in me takes slight issue with the traditional gender role bias implied through the conclusion, thus a rating of 3.5 rounded down.
