genuinely did not see the point of this book at all. i didn’t hate it but i just don’t think it was my thing. it was boring and completely underwhelming to me.
It’s hard to tell whether books read by Marin Ireland are good or if they’re just read by Marin Ireland. We Run The Tides is crisp and subtle; the language is direct but not unclever, and it matches the simultaneous youth and wisdom of the young protagonist, Eulabee. I thought We Run The Tides would be about a teenage friendship and a mysterious kidnapping. In reality, the novel shoulders coming of age themes such as developing femininity, honestly, self respect and self acceptance, ridicule and isolation, and navigating the conception of right and wrong in the face of youth, which is both unserious and world-ending. You can read this on the surface and note only surges of teenage friendships or the tale of a young girl dropped by all of her friends—by most of her community—for a failure to yearn for attention. We Run The Tides, however, swells with greater depth than that and should be acknowledged beyond its surface.

In the beginning of the book, I was excited because it felt like it was laying the groundwork for a cool mystery novel. However, literally nothing happened in this book’s two hundred pages. Would not recommend.
