August 2022 Hoopla Bonus Borrows Recomendation

Max Max meets Lord of the Rings. Or someone saw The Shannara Chronicles and wanted to write an early history of that universe.

I didn't mind that this comic dropped us straight into the action, but it jumped around way too much. A better setup would be introducing the MC then slowly expanding to introduce the orcs and the weird vampire sorcerer.

An interesting mashup of a post-apocalyptic Earth with fantasy. Somehow or another the Earth was opened up to creatures we thought were fiction--orcs, goblins, monsters, mages. The how is never explained. I am guessing that most of the people have no idea. It looks like they are too busy surviving to try to figure it out. That part makes sense to me. The hardships of living day to day in the new reality would take precedence for most people.

I really loved this. I went in not knowing what to expect but this is so fun! I’m not usually a fan of urban fantasy but apparently post-apocalyptic fantasy is DEFINITELY my thing.
Super pumped for Vol 2.
I liked this enough though that I might start snagging the issues of it.

I was completely lost at first. Too many perspectives and travelers and dystopian world building. But I just went with it, and now I'm very intrigued. Hopefully the second novel will help explain some of this.

This is a great, fun book. You'll blow through it quick, and you'll be excited to see what's coming up.

I don't want to tell you anything about it, really, because I think the discovery of what's going on here is what made me enjoy it. So don't read anything else about it, pick it up and read it.

On a reread, I my feelings are still much the same as the first time around. The story in volume 1 feels a little choppy in delivery, but the plot is interesting, the characters are engaging, and the art is strong all the way through. The blending of fantasy and post-apocalyptic elements feels both familiar and fresh. Altogether, its a dynamic series that I'm curious to keep exploring.

"The Realm" combines high fantasy with a post-apocalyptic world to create a wild, gritty, and solidly entertaining survival adventure. It's not without its flaws, but volume 1 tells a good story with excellent art. The characters and plot are engaging and the world, while smashing a lot of recognizable elements together, forms an aesthetic that works. It's a series I'm definitely game to keep reading.

I was drawn to this title because of the premise. There are a lot of scifi post-apocalyptic stories, but not many fantasy titles. On that count, this volume delivered, serving up a sort of Fallout meets Skyrim setting where goblins, sword-wielding warriors, and evil sorcerers wander through the ruins of the American midwest. Unfortunately, the characters are fairly thin and the time and setting jumps make it difficult to tell what exactly is happening. Still worth a shot, just not as good as I'd hoped.

It's not that there was anything wrong with this comic, it just really felt like The Walking Dead, but make it fantasy. It's another story of a man looking for meaning, fighting other men. Oh and there's one cool black woman. And that one person, Rook, that uses she/her pronouns, but we know absolutely nothing about, even what she looks like really. OoooOhhh mysterious.

Don't get me wrong, there are things about this story that were intriguing. It just felt more than a little formulaic, especially considering the overall concept was interesting. I'm curious about the disappearing dog, the boy that comes back to life, and why one guy secretly seems to have magic, but I'm not actually interested in the primary plot at all.
