It’s not a typical fantasy epic where our heroes overcome the big bad and move on. It shows how gray life is. It is worth reading, and two scenes will live with me indefinitely. Grab some tissues and buckle up if you give it a go.

I'm surprised that I enjoyed this as much as I did. I didn't really care for Mamoru or Tekeru but I love Misaki.
Even though I didn't care for Mamoru, I am sad that know one knows that he was able to master the Whispering Blade.. And Misaki talking to his corpse hit me hard.
As for Tekeru, I'm glad Miskai fought him. I don't think that it would have been that simple for him to make such a drastic change but I liked the ending

Honestly this is a fantastic book. The characters, the discussion it creates with the reader about the nature of propaganda, politics and warfare. The characters are full of complex motivations, doubts, traumas, triumphs and tragedies. Mamoru is such a good kid, all of Misaki’s kids are. Misaki is so multidimensional. Takeru really puts you through a hate/love dynamic and you even come to sympathize with him at points. The supporting characters are even immensely layered through how they handle the highs and lows of their lives before and amidst the narrative of this novel. “Sword of Kaigen” is quite the appropriate title for this.

“I protected Setsuko and the children.” Misaki felt her face twist into a snarl of rage. “Five people were here in the house with me when the Ranganese broke down the doors, and all of them are with us now.” Her snarl turned predatory and she felt the need for blood in her teeth. “One of our sons was with you. Just one. And where is he now?”
