Any book that makes me not hate a first person narrative never mind 5 of them deserves 5 stars off the bat.
This is poetry in literature format - I was engrossed and transported in a way that doesn’t happen very often. This was an out of comfort zone pick for me initially and I couldn’t be happier about it.

This book took way too long to get interesting, and for it being a decent size book (500+ pages), that was frustrating. I had all kinds of issues with the first half of the book, I actually liked the second half a lot better.
It felt like in the first half the timeline was all over the place. The book is told from the perspective of the mother and her four daughters. Sometimes there would be a general month/year date at the beginning of a section, so you would expect the following text to be in that general timeframe, but each character would end up talking about different timeframes, sometimes out of order, which was unnecessary and confusing.
Also, in the first half, the characters' voices seemed inconsistent. It feels like they are each writing a journal, complete with spelling errors, slang and incorrect term usage for the 16 year old, but then the 5 year old was writing as if she was MUCH older, which really distracted me.
The second half of the book really picked up the pace. It was interesting and I feel like I learned a lot about life in a different time and place. The issues I had with the first half stopped being a problem in the second half. Overall, I thought this book had an interesting concept and plot, but I wouldn't recommend it.

All I have to say about this book is WOW. The author truly took you into the lives of the characters. The detail was beautiful. The story was beautiful. I laughed, I cried, I was upset. This book truly did something to me I was not expecting. Truly great book. Would recommend.
