It wasnt what i was expecting at all but i when i finished it i cried because it was such a good book.
I wanted to enjoy this book. This was the first book I’ve read by James Patterson, and I picked it up because it was written with Dolly Parton, and she’s just the best. James Patterson is supposed to be this big, best-selling, amazing author, but I was just not impressed with this book. The premise was interesting, but it wasn’t executed very well and it was lacking.
AnnieLee Keyes is out to make it as a country singer in Nashville, but she has a mysterious past. She meets Ethan Blake, who has a lot of demons, and he convinces retired country superstar Ruthanna Ryder to hear AnnieLee sing. Ruthanna decides to help AnnieLee, supporting her through a quick rise to fame, helping her record songs and get them out into the world.
Stop here for spoilers ***
But of course AnnieLee’s past comes back to bite her, and eventually, finally, she has to reveal everything. She ran away from her physically abusive stepfather to a man she thought she loved, only to be “sold” by him to another man, who seems to have sex trafficked her, although that’s not specifically stated. AnnieLee - actually Rose - ran from that situation, but the men who kept her thought they owned her, so they wanted to either take her back or possibly kill her.
The lead up to the reveal of both Ethan and AnnieLee’s pasts lack suspense and the reveal itself was disappointing and lacking. Thankfully, the story has a happy ending. AnnieLee continues to perform, and she and Ethan end up engaged.
The book as a whole lacks the suspense I thought came with James Patterson’s books. The characters are interesting but not filled out with interesting actions, and ultimately the book was a bit boring. I liked reading about country music, and developing songs, and I liked the inclusion of the song lyrics and that Dolly released a whole album based on the songs from the book. Honestly, that’s the saving grace of this book: the music. But overall it just came out lacking. Thankfully it was all short chapters, an easy and fast read.

It was good! I just wished they would have spent more time on AnnieLee's background.
I listened to Run, Rose, Run via audiobook, which was a full cast narration with Dolly Parton, and I must say that I really enjoyed listening to Dolly narrate the Ruthanna character. However my overall enjoyment of this book was poor and this was the only saving grace. I haven't actually read a James Patterson book before, but this wasn't a good introduction to his writing.
It was a very weak plot, I personally wouldn't consider this a thriller or a mystery at all. I disliked the characters and couldn't find any connection with them. I don't think that AnnieLee's character developed at all throughout the book which is a shame as she had potential for redemption.
I didn't gain much from this book unfortunately so I'm not sure I would read any more books by James Patterson. If you are interested in this book, I would recommend listing to the audiobook.

I’m not gonna lie, I had pretty low expectations of this book, but I was pleasantly surprised with how quickly I was suckered into the story.
AnnieLee Keyes is determined to make it big in the world of country music. She finds her way to Nashville, and she works hard to make her dreams come true. As is often the case the case though, it’s not long until her past catches up with her.
I listened to the audiobook of this which is absolutely fantastic. It’s narrated by a great cast including Dolly herself.
The plot left a bit to be desired. There weren’t many thriller elements, and those that did make it into the book fell flat. AnnieLee’s revealed secrets at the end lacked any oomph and weren’t reflected in her characterisation earlier in the book.
It was enjoyable, though- I’d definitely recommend the audiobook to anyone who has this on their radar.

Was to hard to get from library while reading all my other books. Might come back to it.
