Plus a star for being a 45 minute read.

Turbulence is a series of brief passing moments...a few minutes or hours, between relative strangers woven together into short glimpses of how lives are interconnected. Beautifully written...the writing is the star of this short book, and very creative. Left me wanting more.

È incredibile come in poche pagine Szalay riesca a dipingere ritratti memorabili, a delineare vicende, a raccontare vite.

I wasn't sure how I would like a book had us meeting people for only a short time, before sending us off with another person for a short time, over and over again. But I really liked this book despite not getting to know more about each person and what would happen in their life after our brief meeting. I became so used to the structure of the book that I didn't want it to be over and wondered how I would feel when we'd come to end of our journey.

The author did a good job of circling us to a conclusion that I felt gave me closure, despite there not being a real ending to the story. It continues on, with some likeable characters and some unlikeable characters, giving us just a glimpse into the life of each traveler. I plan to read the author's earlier book, All That is Man because I enjoyed how he dealt with the characters in this book, so much.

Thank you to Scribner and NetGalley for this ARC.

To give context to future readers of this review, I read this during the COVID-19 pandemic. Of course prior to this time, it would be talked about how interconnected people from around the world were becoming. But, I think for many people the COVID-19 pandemic just made that feel more than they had previously.

I bring that up because this book so beautifully made the world feel so connected. He does this through little vignettes into the lives of people from around the world. However, it's not telling stories of completely unrelated people. Each new person that is focused on has traveled by airplane and has some connection to the previous person. Some of the connections between one character and the next are deep, and some are simply two ships passing in a night.

In some ways you could say not much happens in through the course of the book - there's not major plot line that sticks out. Nothing is fully resolved or seen through to the end. Yet, in the short time we see each character, we get a sense of their trajectory going forward. And, through the course of the book, the reader is shown again and again that everyone is complex.

This book brings such a cool idea in terms of form. It feels like a short story collection, bit-sized stories that centre on a moment, a relationship, a revelation. But they're all tied together, each one feeding in some way into the next. It's a really cool concept and executed brilliantly. The characters are intriguing, and I would love to have spent a little more time with each one, but for the sake of continuity, we have to move on to the next story. It makes you think about the lives you touch, the way you are touched by the lives of others around you, the journeys we make.

simplistic, interesting stories about regular people we often come across. i enjoy the subtle links between each life. however, the flight aspect was lost on me- for a book surrounding passengers (and a pilot), shouldnt the plane journeys hold more significance?
