This isn't really as good as All That Man Is for me, principally because it's shorter and does compromise on some of the nuance and depth of that venerable collection. Nonetheless, I am willing to round it up to a 4 as it is still one of the more coherent short-story collections I have read (and not just because of the trickery with airports, I promise!) and explores connections between people, as well as the baggage we all carry with us (ha ha).

A clever series of interconnected sketches revolving around global travel. Each chapter focused on the dynamics of 2-3 individuals, with one of them carrying over as the primary character in the next chapter. An enjoyable read, but felt a bit like a very well executed writing-class assignment.

This book is a masterclass in how to write both short stories (because they are) and also interconnected lives within a novel (because they are too).

The people written about travel through the pages, dovetailing each tale together in such a supremely subtle but such an arresting way. You know the link is coming. Even when you know which character will draw the book forward you can't help but be impressed with the delivery. Besides that there are beautiful lines. Twists. Just lots of little things that pepper the work with a believability. It's honest fiction. The best kind of writing.

Deeply satisfying. Immeasurably gratifying. I'm very impressed with Szalay and can't wait to jump into All That Man Is.

I actually really enjoyed this read. It was well written and I liked that Szalay was able to cover so much in such a short amount of time. However, given that the book was so short, I don’t feel like I’ll have a lasting connection with any of these characters.
