I loved the way that the 12 short stories, or vignettes, in Szalay's Turbulence, were all interconnected. This is a short, but powerful, look at human relationships - we never know the impact we can have on the people that we meet, or the ways that we could be peripherally connected. This novel really takes the idea of "6 degrees of separation" and runs with it.

I wouldn't consider this anything life changing, but the concept was so intriguing to me, and the execution so well done, that I am inclined to rate it high and recommend it to fans of literary fiction or books about humanity and human relationships.

Thank you to Scribner and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

You can tell where this collection is going to end—literally—pretty early, but I do enjoy a collection of interconnected short stories.

A nice quick read that left me looking wistfully out a rain soaked window in contemplation.

This took me an hour or so to read and left me feeling like there wasn't enough meat to the story/ies. But the more I think about it, that's the whole point of the novel. The novel's premise--snippets of 12 lives come together as one touches another--heightens our awareness of the momentary connections we foster with people in our daily lives. When we actually stop and reflect on these moments, like we are pushed to do by reading Turbulence, we become more empathetic to others' situations and more emotionally intelligent.

This book is a masterclass in how to write both short stories (because they are) and also interconnected lives within a novel (because they are too).

The people written about travel through the pages, dovetailing each tale together in such a supremely subtle but such an arresting way. You know the link is coming. Even when you know which character will draw the book forward you can't help but be impressed with the delivery. Besides that there are beautiful lines. Twists. Just lots of little things that pepper the work with a believability. It's honest fiction. The best kind of writing.

Deeply satisfying. Immeasurably gratifying. I'm very impressed with Szalay and can't wait to jump into All That Man Is.

I find the pacing nice and the short chapters very readable. The writing is also quite immersive.
