There are so many many seemingly disparate elements in The Ridge that it could easily turn into a disjointed train wreck of a novel. Michael Koryta is much better than that though. He manages to weave together exotic cats, a mysterious lighthouse, and the failure of a small town newspaper into a compelling ghost story with ease.

Deputy sheriff Kevin Kimble and newspaper man Roy Darmus are both contacted by Wyatt French, the town drunk and keeper of a lighthouse in the middle of the woods. French seems to ramble crazily and speaks of death and suicide to both men. Darmus is so unsettled by his conversation with French that he drives out to the lighthouse to check on him. There he finds French’s body and the beginnings of a strange and mysterious story.

He and Kimble work together to put together the pieces gathered by French. At the same time, an exotic cat rescue facility opens across from the lighthouse. The cats are uncomfortable in their new environment, and Kimble is soon dealing with problems on that front too. The truth of Blade Ridge and the happenings at the rescue center are parallel tracks that soon come crashing together in an amazing finish.

When I read The Cypress House, I was sure it was going to be my favorite of Koryta’s three supernatural tales. However, The Ridge somehow grabbed me even more than The Cypress House. Koryta continues to best himself with each novel he turns out and has definitely put himself on my list of must-read authors. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.

I actually started off really enjoying this story, the setup, the mystery and inclusion of a cat preserve (different). What lost my interest was when it took a really paranormal (sci-fi) turn, then to me it got a little far fetched and silly. It did have a good bit of mystery and who-dunit feel to it.

Although paranormal/supernatural is not my usual reading fare, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The setting held unique elements and the characters felt very real. The storyline was intriguing and kept me guessing about things up until the very end. Lots of twists and turns made the pace quick and engaging. Solid writing with no missteps, and a satisfying ending.

Hell of a thriller, a creepy gem!
I finished this in less than 2 days. I could have finished it in a day but wasn't feeling comfortable reading this alone at night.

Koryta is so amazing that you will start rooting for a character that he has described in just 2 lines. The book is emotional, heartfelt and tragic at places. I often stopped reading just to let the emotions sink in (and also to check if I'm still alone in the room..)
So glad that I've discovered this master story teller. I want to read all his books now!

Fantastic! This one grabbed me and wouldn't let go until I had finished it. Part mystery/thriller with a supernatural element. I'll definitely read others by this author!

Notes:

Yay libraries!

Came across this author during the current Audible sale. I'm glad I did! Loved the way he incorporated lions into the story. Solid characters & interesting plot. I would stick this story more under UF/Horror. It's not really a horror story, but I can see how some would consider it as one.

This is my fourth book by this author and different from the rest. This was more of a horror/thriller novel than a mystery. I enjoyed it with some hesitations. I questioned the actions of the detective mostly but I still liked him and the rest of the characters. The ending could have been better. I haven’t rated this author’s work less than a 3 so I feel like I’ve found a reliable mystery and now a supernatural writer.

This supernatural thriller captured my interest from the first page. The writing style is smooth and engaging, the plot fast-paced, the characters interesting and endearing. I was genuinely frightened at times! I stayed up much too late to read just one more chapter, and took advantage of the baby’s nap times to finish the book. My only slight disappointment came from the rather abrupt ending. I turned the page expecting another chapter, and I was startled to find there wasn’t one. I would have liked some closure. I even went searching to see if the author has written a sequel, but he hasn't. I was left with a number of questions at the end, but even those didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the book. I’ll definitely be looking for more of Michael Koryta’s work!

Creepy, creepy, creepy. I actually got up in the middle of the night to finish this one. Recommended for Dean Koontz or Stephen King fans.

Right feel like I should do a disclaimer: I'm not a big horror reader. Therefore I have little to compare this to ... so I may not be a typical reviewer on this.

I loved it, great atmosphere and story. Kept me hooked to the edge of my seat.
