A bunch of lively banters stitched together with a frustrating third act, Minx will be appreciated by Julia Quinn completionist — there are glimpses of what's to come in this early work, individual elements that make reappearance in the much more thought-through series that is The Bridgerton. By no mean an essential read, but a curious insight into the author's growth on her craft.

It's evident in Minx Julia Quinn had discovered her prowess in writing witty, chemistry-filled exchange between the love interests, they had one in a ball, in a carriage, in a garden, in a lodging... in all Regency scenarios imaginable. But the story lacks a driving force pushing the narrative forward; so while it's all fun and charming, overall the characters lack nuance beyond their social status and initial setup (a serious guardian and his untamed ward). I was forewarned the third act conflict is horribly executed, and it indeed is. Its extremity is like switching from a watching a rom-com to a deranged reality show — miscommunication galore. I found the last few chapters hilarious in its absurdity, but obvious that could not have been the intention.

Part of me kind of want to complete the series by picking up Book 2 (Already read Book 1. Yes, I'm reading out of order), even though I know it won't be Julia Quinn at her best... we shall see.

I’m a dark tense dystopian type of reader but sometimes I just want to read something predictable like this where one knows 100% they will fück. I can’t say I never had a moment when I was screaming into my kindle “WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING DAMBASS” but I guess that’s how it works. This is a she-is-not-like-the-others-only-one-bed-for-both-of-them type of book
