This is my fave of the series! My fave trope ever is fake relationship which this has but also enemies to fake fiances to lovers lmao which is epic! Dax is just swoonnnnnn!
Engaging the Office Enemy is another great addition to the California Dreamin Series. I loved so much about this story !
enemies to lovers
fake engagement
Close quarters
Marvel movie quotes
Rom Com quotes
Cruise ships !!!!
Alexis and Dax have such great chemistry from the first page. Their flirty banter reminded me so much of my husband and I; all I could do was smile and wait for them to get together. Alexis’ internal monologue added so much comedy to the story.
Their willingness to open up and finally trust one another added another dimension to the story. While they are both somewhat broken, they have huge hearts and the capacity to love fiercely. And oh how I wish I had a group of friends like Alexis does. I want to jump into the story and be friends with them. I cannot wait for the next installment.
Thank you to Kristin Canary for my complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Dax and Alexis (AKA RainbowBrite and Booger Bear) were such an adorable couple. I'm a huge sucker for a good enemies to lovers, and this book did not disappoint. I loved that she fought with herself throughout the whole book, and it wasn't an easy retreat. I am getting more and more sad with each book in this series that I finish. I don't want it to be over!

I think I might have my next auto-buy author. My first by Kristin Canary and certainly won’t be my last! I’m in love with her writing and her story telling ability! From the first few chapters I was automatically totally immersed into the story and the characters! I love both characters, Dax and Alexis so much!! I felt for both of them! I loved how Canary, although the book being a rom-com, touched on important issues making the story all the more meaningful and Alexis’s character development throughout the story was just ( chef’s kiss ) SO GOOD. Another thing I loved was their dialogue and banter! I was obsessed with their enemies to lovers trope and their beginning conversations when they first get to know each other are just so good! I loved how by it being a closed door romance; that didn’t take away from the passion between the two characters, which I definitely appreciated! And as a personal marvel fan… that epilogue and all of the Marvel references… AHHHHH I loved loved this book.
Alexis & Dax
What a surprise for this ARC to land on my kindle early. I finished up the book I was reading & immediately started Engaging the Office Enemy!
While all of the books in the California Dreamin’ series can be read as a standalone, it’s best to read them in order- you learn about each of the women throughout & Alexis has always been the most “mysterious” and closed off.
We learn why in this book as she pretends to be her “mortal enemy’s” fake fiancée so that he can get a job at a family oriented company. One of Kristin Canary’s biggest strengths in her writing is that while she follows typical trope conventions, the backstories of her characters are so unique and different. What we learn about why Alexis holds everything so close to the vest is unexpected & the vulnerability she shows as she peels back the layers of mistrust while she gets to know Dax is truly a journey.
Ohh sweet Dax - what a guy. Alexis’s office nemesis calls her Rainbow Brite and while she thinks it’s because she changes her hair color weekly, he shares a sleepy confession that makes you swoon.
While this book is told in single 1st person POV, its obvious that Dax falls far before Alexis does. Canary does a great job of weaving in those “are these real or for show” moments of a fake engaged couple that as the reader, has you cheering for them & hoping you get more of glimpses of those scenes.
While it’s easy to get annoyed with Alexis for not dropping her walls & letting Dax all the way in quickly, you also have to have enough perspective that this book is told over the course of one month & the progress she makes by facing her past during that time feels much more realistic.
These two bond over family trauma, getting to know you games, water activities, & rom-com movies. It was definitely worth the wait & I’m not ready to leave this series behind!
Definitely read this book if you like:
- enemies to more
- fake engagements
- guy falls first
- only one bed
- authentic characters
- a sweet, yet perfect grand gesture
Thank you to the author for an early copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!

Engaging The Office Enemy was a deliciously sassy and sweet romance, and exactly the lighthearted and fun distraction I was hoping it would be. A blend of some fun tropes... part enemies-to-lovers and part workplace romance with a splash of fake fiancé, and it came together fantastically in this hilarious romcom. It was a trope-tastic delight! The characters are both so likeable, the chemistry is there, and the bickering/bantering made it such a fun read.
I loved Alexis and Dax’s story of rivals to friends, enemies to more. There isn’t anything I love more than good banter in a book and the banter between these two was excellent. From the start, these two had me chucking with their back and forth and as the book went on, it only got better. Not only was the banter great, but their chemistry was fantastic. I loved their fake engagement. I could see the sparks really start to fly then. As they get to know each other, though, something between them shifts with the realisation that, perhaps, they have more in common than either of them realised. They both bring a lot of baggage to the table, however, and trust doesn’t come easy for either of them, especially for Alexis. The build-up of this relationship along with the undeniable attraction burning between Alexis and Dax made me giddy. The romance here was a delicious slow burn that I couldn't get enough of. I was eagerly turning the pages just waiting for that moment when Alexis and Dax finally give into the chemistry between them. And when they finally did? YOWZA! On the surface this was a funny romcom, but there were layers of emotions Alexis and Dax had to wade through beneath that humorous surface, and there was an abundance of swoon worthy moments that I just adored.
Low on the angsty drama but high on the sweet romance, Engaging The Office Enemy is a sweet, slow-burning love story chock full of feels. Another masterfully crafted story full of charm, comedy, and emotion. I laughed and swooned my way through this book, and I loved every single second of it.

I love a good enemies-to-lovers story. Add in fake dating, forced proximity, Marvel references, the romcom movies of my teens and twenties and I am hooked! This was my first read by this author and I loved it. I’m here for a romcom that also tackles some tough issues - in this case, betrayal, loss of a parent with things left unsaid and addiction. Alexis is a lovable, slightly damaged heroine and Dax is that snarky but eventually sweet, swoony hero that we love in these books. Watching them catch the love bug while faking it was a fun time. Great read and I will definitely be getting into the rest of Kristin’s backlist.
Thank you to the author for the eARC. I was not required to leave a positive review. These are my honest thoughts.

Alexis’s world is slowly changing, all her friends are getting married and having kids and her office nemesis is still getting all the good accounts just because he’s the boss’s nephew. So when Dax approaches Alexis and asks for her help securing a new job elsewhere Alexis takes the opportunity to achieve two goals; getting the good accounts at work and a Dax-free workplace. What Alexis doesn’t anticipate is Dax being anything like she imagined him to be and she actually tolerating him but could she goes as far as even liking him?
I’ve really liked Alexis straight to the punch personality and how much she cares for her friends and sister. Alexis is guarded and scared but Dax saw underneath her brightly colored hair and gave her the support and honesty she craved. Dax can hold his own especially going up against Alexis in a battle of wits and truly cares deeply for those he cares about. Alexis and Dax had some real raw and honest conversations with each other and learned so much more than they expected.
I’m not gonna give any spoilers but the ending was great and very fitting for this special group of friends who are more like family!
