(In the first issue, did I miss Nora's house eventually getting burned down as mentioned? Were the Avengers actually killed? Is it Nora or Martha?)

I feel like there was some good solid stuff about Vision and his family, but things on the periphery still should have been fleshed out a bit more. That praying scene was amazing.

An amazing, well written, heartfelt piece on family and what it means to be human.

It's great to have this fantastic series all collected together. It's such a smart, unusual story, and a great showcase for the complexities of the Vision.

We discussed this further on a special episode of Howe's Things:

I got it, but I didn't necessarily like it. King checks of all the boxes for bringing literary hugh quality work (foreshadowing, symmetry, repetition, the theme of the water vase, invoking Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice, etc.) to comic books, but I was left cold by the overall book. The wife is Eve in destroying Vision's attempt at a suburban paradise. The younger Latino superhero with an addiction analogy. Killing a dog. That terrible Native Amreican joke. I think if I read individual issues, I might have liked it more with the slow build up. That said, some single issues are stronger than others (#7 I Too Shall Be Saved by Love and #8 Victorious and #10 All Will Return to Normal and #11 You and I Were Born For Better Things and #12 Spring). The writing is a generous 3.

The artists do a great job! Michael Walsh's style is consistent with Gabriel Hernandez Walta's artwork. I think the work is appropriately dark and claustrophobic. Most pages use four or five panels and expand up to 9 to great effect. I really loved Micheal Walsh's style in capturing the love story of Vision and the Scarlet Witch. The facial expressions are so well done. Also, this solidifies Jordie Bellaire as one of the best colorists. The art is appropriately dark and light, but the best when Victor is talking with The Avengers is a great for colors. Solid 4.

I think this gets stuck as four stars because this is the deluxe edition and includes the script of the entire series with some layouts, inks, colors and letters. It reveals how integral the artist's addition are to the script, but it's also fun when he describes Iron Man getting blasted "in his stupid face and body." It also shows how some scenes change in the final version with new dialogue and artwork/panels. The letters pages are included and some more articles, which I didn't have time to read in full, but "Behold the Visuals" is a great breakdown of some of the visual storytelling in the series.

This was a treat! I was expecting more of a fantasy story but this is definitely far more grounded in family values than I was expecting and was quite dark thematically.
The illustrations are gorgeous. The plot is tight and keeps you turning the pages, there are few over-arcing narratives which really aids the story in keeping you interested and engaged in the family drama that unravels throughout.

Sometimes you run across a comic book collection that reminds you that comic books can absolutely be literature, too. Such is The Vision. I've read many a book where the flesh and blood characters are nowhere near as human as Vision and his family of synthezoid. It's sometimes funny and often heart-wrenching. It's also a great exploration of human nature and how good and evil are not easily defined.

what the heck. 😭 i am ruined. tom king always gets *love* and family dynamics right. i’m still so new to reading comics, and i feel like this has spoiled me for anything else to come. not that i’m complaining, of course, but oh my god. my poor small heart cannot handle this.
