It just didn't hook me... too slow, perhaps?

I don’t even know where to begin. I started my We Were The Lucky Ones journey with the first four episodes of the TV show—and then I had to wait for the fifth episode to come out, and I NEEDED to know what would happen. Once I learned that the book was based on Georgia Hunter’s actual family, there was nothing for me to do but buy the book as soon as I could. I was amazed and inspired even before I started reading.
But this book. Hunter is an incredible writer; she’s thoughtful and reflective, and her descriptions of her family members are so incredibly human. They didn’t immediately turn into superheroes just from the fact of finding themselves in a war. They were real people who were annoyed at having to work at beet farms, who wished they were composing music instead of marching with the army. They were scared, and they were brave, and they were resourceful. This novel rang so remarkably true, and I’m so glad Hunter decided to write it.
