A novel written by a NYT reporter is always going to provide a lot of cool insight into how the journalism industry works and what the day to day for a reporter is like. So for that reason alone, this book was enjoyable, but on top of that it had a lot to offer on love and relationships in the modern era. While politics was the backdrop to the whole story, most of the narrative focused on long term relationships succeeding or failing based on the ability of those in them to find ways to love and understand with so many factors working against that. A big idea it explored was the parts that matter other than love, like a sense of self rather than a shared joint identity or managing to disagree but still communicate. The ending felt a little incomplete to me, however, with some characters storylines getting more resolution than others, but that could just be an intentional choice because that’s how so many love stories end in real life.
