4th pendergast book
Like the character development of Prndergast

I feel like I have heard the title of this book before but I have no idea where....

This book and I are in a weird place. I really liked this book and thought it was going to be my second favourite of the first 5 in the series....until it wasn't. After much thought I think it was just how the book wrapped up the mystery that I didn't like.

As in the other books, you get to see all sides to the characters in the book: the good and the bad (and ugly). Also this book I feel might have some real history in it that I will need to look into, which is great. Funnily, of all the gross descriptions of things in this book, the thing that grosses me out the most is when Pendergast picked up a moldy teddy bear.

With this being the 5th book of this series I have read, I'm starting to see that while they are all different and interesting, they are starting to be formulaic. I'm still going to be continuing on with the series, but if this continues, knowing myself I will get bored in the next book or two and stop reading them.

This book was absolutely intense! I could not have predicted the ending what so ever! As usually Preston & Child introduce another strong female character that helps Detective Pendergast solve these unexplainable crimes. This book was dark and definitely thrilling. It left me thinking about the ending for days after I finished.

First Pendergast story I read and after reading all 10 ( so far) this one is my favorite. A true stand alone book.

I'm a big fan of Preston & Child and this is a great book. I love how unexpected the killer was.

This was spookier and scarier than its predecessors. Didn't think that was probable.

I have read 5 of the Pendergast books, not in any particular order. I really loved the majority of [b:The Cabinet of Curiosities|39031|The Cabinet of Curiosities (Pendergast, #3)|Douglas Preston|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1169235779s/39031.jpg|817317] but was not happy with the ending. There is something about the writing style of Preston and Child that makes the books hard to put down. Part of it is the pacing, but much of it has to do with the ongoing mystery surrounding Pendergast himself. Anyway, unlike Cabinet, I loved the ending of this book and the supporting character Corrie. I'm really looking forward to my next Pendergast book.

Notes:

Scott Brick is the narrator & he was great!
A+ for characters and nice detail touches for plot.

Read this for my library book group. There were some interesting parts and some parts I really didn't care for. The overall denouement seemed a little thin but there was one part I REALLY liked (identified below to avoid spoilers). I didn't dislike the book, but I also probably won't continue the series just considering how many other prolific mystery series I want to read.

SPOILER ALERT: The nursery rhymes were so perfectly creepy. I loved it.
