Interesting story of unlikely friendships and the families people build in the worst circumstances. Near the beginning of WWII in London, Grace obtains a job in a bookstore, though she admits to being a non-reader. As she begins to transform the shop, and the people begin to transform each other, she develops a love for reading. Through the Blitz, she reads aloud to customers and to people in the air raid shelters. Despite the tragic circumstances, they all learn how the literature bonds them together, providing hope when they can't find it anywhere else.
