Beautiful. Also relevant. There are things about 1948 South Africa that ring true here, today. So much fear. This is a sad book, for sure, but also lovely.

I've not read a book of such lovely prose in a long time. It did take me quite a bit of time to get through it. I think because I've gotten used to reading books that don't have a lot of depth or substance. My bad. Beautifully written, both heartbreaking and hopeful, it contains all the qualities of a worthwhile read.
