By the end of the first chapter or so of the Parable of the Sower, I knew I was going to rate this novel five stars. It is easily the best book I’ve read this year, and possibly the best science fiction book I’ve ever read. The audiobook is fantastic, too; Lynne Thigpen brings this narration to life and creates such embodied characters with her voice.

So many science fiction novels read like anthropological texts or technical journals: they describe their worlds with exacting but distant prose. The Parable of the Sower does not keep its distance—you are right there with the narrator, in the blood and sweat and shit, experiencing this dystopian reality right along with her. And this dystopian world is believable and vivid and jarring. It holds a mirror to our own society and forces us to consider a future where capitalism and climate change have taken their worst possible courses.

Thank you, Octavia Butler. What a masterpiece.

god almighty. i find myself thinking like lauren at least in regards to god. is this scary? is this a warning of what’s to come? what is the fate of your world if your god has become change? what is it if your god is stagnant? Butler writes dystopia like it can be real. not like anything i’ve read before. everything feels too far away, too glitzy. i have to remember though this is only dystopia for the US

Octavia Butler managed to reel me in immediately. i was so captivated by this book i struggled to put it down. highly recommend this, all of the themes are relevant to now, especially important now.

this book may end up influencing my own religious beliefs, and it's a work of fiction. the belief is real, despite the book taking place in an alternate future of our world.

i do see where Butler is coming from with her depiction of what she was observing 30 years ago. we may still even get to the point of ecological and societal collapse she describes here, if we don't snap out of our war ridden ways.

amazing book. please read this.

Amazing, thought provoking yet simplistic writing. Its a shame how relevant this book still is 30 years later. A truly brilliant work

trigger warnings: incest, rape, physical abuse, death of family, gore and injury description, sexual content, drug use and abuse, arson and fire, racism, sexism, murder, enslavement, cannibalism, child abuse, trafficking, suicide, gun violence, and more probably.

Before I get into my doom and gloom reaction let me just say that terrifying as this book is, it's incredibly well thought out and the cause and effect of what leads to the situations in this book are rooted in very realistic patterns. The cast of characters are really interesting and it was something to see how desperate they were for happiness that they were pushing through the nightmare of their lives. It's also a fascinating look into how law and morality breaks down when safety, freedom, food, and shelter aren't a guarantee. It's a lot.

I am incredibly (insert adequate word here) to see a book that is set three years into our current future exist in exacerbated conditions of today. It feels like a cold bucket of water tossed over my head knowing this book was written in 1993 and we are living in a reality predicted nearly thirty years ago by an author who said THIS is exactly how it'll get worse if things don't change...uh. oof.

Anyways. Read for your own awareness and preparation. It's a book of survival through some really dire fucking situations and it's a little sobering to realize maybe perishing before it gets this bad is the ideal way because no way in hell am i doing any of THIS.

RIP to my nerves bc I am living in a nightmare.
