An interesting take on unionizing and the problems with factories with an interweaving of witchcraft.

I have mixed feelings about this because some part of me would like this to be longer so that we get more character development. On the other hand, the story seems to fit the length of the novel because in the historical context, the events couldn’t afford to be long lest the characters starve. All in all, it was fine but overall unmemorable.

I'm a little torn on this one. 2.5 I guess?
I randomly found this in a little free library and was like, witches? Massachusetts? 123 wee pages? snag!! And you get pretty much just what it says. I liked the queer romance, it seemed like how I'd imagine a relationship between two women would form in old timey times, when that wasn't really an open thing. Not that I know, obviously, but it felt both respectful and non-anachronistic. The characters weren't super fleshed out or anything, but it's a novella, it's fine. And honestly I don't think I could read historical fiction that was much longer than this.
What was baffling was how slavery was discussed. I get it's historical, and maybe that's partly why I don't like to read much historical fiction, but comparing slaves to animals? It's impossible to not think of a Black person reading this and being like "uh, bitch said what??" I mean, I thought that and I'm white. I get why it was brought up in explaining how the magic works, but there must have been a better way. Also, if I never read the phrase "rosebud mouth" again I will be fine.
I definitely wouldn't run to seek this out or anything, but if you're interested in witches, Massachusetts, unions, queer relationships, and you happen to find it in a little free library, it does deliver all those things in a short number of pages.
