My God.

So this is how King does it, why he's known as the master. This issue started out so calmly, even though so much was taking place. Up to this point there has been humour interlaced with extreme darkness, dark humour but with more dark would be an apt description. But King has kept it real and sweet. Scott's relationship with Barda, his attempts at trying to be normal, the war happening beside him, the plot itself, all these elements were moving in a direction I wasn't sure of. What I was unsure of even more was how King would slowly use these themes as complements to Scott's obvious mental illness.

He does it here. The final few pages of this issue explode with raw, unbridled emotion. Mitch Gerads deserves equal if not more credit for unbelievably hard those few pages hit, not to mention the whole trial of Scott Free. It's been a point that the entire story has been building to and both of the stalwarts aka King and Gerads deliver spectacularly. Mister Miracle is slowly shaping up to one of the most honest, real and sympathetic characters I have ever seen in a comic book. The art reflects the same, it's 9-panel, cartoonish vibe balancing just the right amount of irreverence and faithfulness to the art of comic books itself. This is magnificent work, truly.

This is a unique example of masterful storytelling.

At the end of Act One, I can tell you that if the quality remains consistent, this will be a best book of 2017/2018.

I think this may be one of the best titles coming out from any company right now. I love this.

Darkseid is.

Had to make this specific entry because how good this is. The unreliable narrator thing works perfectly for this series, Scott Free is a great character, between his depression and Jessica Cruz's anxiety in Green Lanterns, I feel like DC is truly making an effort to realistically portray mental health issues. There was one scene in this issue where I almost teared up just because of how relatable it is.

Even with those things, this issue also managed to be funny at the same time, without making the joke feel out of place. This has all the signs of a future classic, I hope Tom King keeps the quality up and stop wasting his talent on Batman.
