I adore this picture book.
Not only is the message behind this book both important and powerful, but the illustrations are stunning and add so much to the message of the book.

Maya has so many emotions burning so brightly inside her, but when it comes to navigating the anger, sadness, and confusion within herself she struggles. Thanks to her librarian, she gets help and insight from all the women who came before her on using the feelings and dreams inside her to better herself. Maya uses her new-found knowledge to help her friends and neighbors navigate the light inside themselves.

She has a bright glow at the beginning of the book, but then it starts to change into a different type of glow - anger - as she watches injustices throughout the neighborhood. She goes to story time at the library and sits in the back of the room, since she is too old for that now, and listens to Ms. Scott read. Once she is done, Ms. Scott explains to her "that glowing, all of it, is your most important thing." Ms. Scott hands her books of her ancestors and she begins to read and is inspired by "a healthy love for ourselves, our sisters, and our community" she knows what love is. She recognizes her GLOW. She goes home and finds out about her ancestors, and then shares that with her friends... Shares her GLOW with her friends. They "continue to lift up what they love about the world" and find a way to build up their community.
This is such an inspiring and beautiful book. I will definitely recommend this to others!
I received an advanced e-copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

It was so moving to read this one and I liked the notes about the historical figures at the end.

Thanks to Sourcebooks for the advance copy.

The illustrations in this are gorgeous, and the message is great, too. A little too wordy for story time, but absolutely appropriate for early elementary kids, and useful for discussing emotions as well as inspiration.

Let me say thank you so much to Netgalley for an ecopy of this book. My daughter loved it so much and I truly found it very inspirational. It shows it is okay to have emotions, it is okay to be different, you just need to be you. The characters in the background also was different persay and to me that shows kids at a young age no one truly is the same. The end with the information on strong women, I did not know about these people and used it as a learning tool. The colors were great. I am proud to have my daughter enjoy this book and I will look forward to getting a physical copy for her collection.
