I never wanted to stop reading, that's how good Ann Patchett is at writing. But the story? I really wasn't sure what to think of it by the end. It's my least favorite Patchett book by far and I don't think I'll ever reread it. But other than that, I really don't know what it was that I didn't like.

I really enjoyed this book. It moves slowly, but the characters are so well drawn. Anne Patchett shines a light on them in turn so we feel we're in their heads. The priest, the Russians, General, Carmen, Beatrix, Ruben and so many.
 Except perhaps Roxanne,  but she is " on a pedestal " so maybe that's the point?
It's described as a tragi-comedy, with most of the tragedy coming at the end. But along the way it's a romantic fairytale.
