i was intrigued by the concept, but when i started the book, i became unsure because i found the writing to be kind of cringey, but it improved as the book progressed, and i was genuinely invested in their relationship by the end.

šŸ„° Friends to Lovers
šŸ”® Fantasy Rom-Com
šŸ§ Oblivious Mutual Pining

Iā€™m pretty sure Arek and Matt are the definition of oblivious friends to lovers, throw in some slow burn mutual pining and itā€™s them.

I really enjoyed this book, the world-building and setting was written really well.  It almost gave off a contemporary vibe in a fantasy world.  Yes, there was magic and a king but it was easy and fun to read.  These are the kind of fantasy books I want to read more of.

I loved the vibes of this book, the friendships, the chaotic nature of some of the characters, the romance, and the humor.   It was so lovely.

I stand by my original description of this book when I started it: a chaotic DnD group after the quest, mixed with BBC Merlin, and it's a romcom. And it was FANTASTIC. I really enjoyed this as a fun fantasy read! I usually am not a fan of miscommunication and friends-to-lovers but it was done so well!?! I wish there was more character development and that we got to see things progress a bit more between Matt and Arek - but overall it's just such a fun read!

Absolutely delightful, sardonic, queer fun! This silly spoof on classic high fantasy tales came complete with lovable teen characters, hilarious wit, and a swoon-worthy romance. Sure, the pining became a bit repetitive at times, but more often than not the book was simply endearing. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to get to another angsty Matt and Arek love pining scene. Great side characters, well-paced plot, adorable romanceā€¦ what more could you ask for?

F.T. Lukens may be becoming a favorite YA author of mine. Both ā€˜So This is Ever Afterā€™ and ā€˜In Deeper Watersā€™ easily finding their way into my heart. The characters are hilarious and feel so real, their conversations mimicking the tone of oneā€™s Iā€™ve had with my own friends. Their interactions are the highlight of this book if not the reason why the plot works as well as it does.

Similar to IDW, ā€˜So This is Ever Afterā€™ manages inclusivity and acceptance with little struggle on the authors part. It feels organic and almost right that we have a diverse cast of characters and that their sexualities, their genders and races are what they are. And those arenā€™t the reasons why conflict arises. It is refreshing to read a book where society doesnā€™t hate the characters and their differences are acknowledged and left alone.

My friend Maggie pitched this as basically a Dungeons and Dragons game and I have to agree with them! I like that the typical ā€œhero on a questā€ plot line had a twist and that the people we assume have answers, donā€™t always.
