I expected a silly gay book, I got a silly gay book. It was cute and tropey and I enjoyed it very much.

This book read like a train. It's so fun and funny. I love every single character. A great cosy fantasy with just a bunch of queer romance. Points off though because the pining erred just too much on the side of miscommunication at several points. But it did have me screaming at these idiots to just kiss already. Always fun lmao.
Yeah this was a fun and easy read. Not too complex without getting boring. The chemistry between the MC and the love interest was really well done. The overarching plot was engaging enough. The side characters were all really fun and had their own things going on that I liked too. I'm glad I bought another book by this author. I'm looking forward to reading that one.

Best friends, childhood friends, to lovers.
Enter your typical D&D party set in a high fantasy rom-com. This will they won't they will have you laughing, smiling, sad, and mad all in one.

Ten thousand stars. Loved it. Felt like a warm hug. Everyone was queer and everyone was happy and everything was good. Immediately seeking out the author’s other books.

Here are some of the specifics I liked:
  • bumbling teenagers trying to rule a kingdom, having the best of intentions, & actually doing a pretty good job
  • low angst & not much plot. I know "not much plot" doesn't SOUND like a good thing, but in this case, it absolutely is (at least for me). Pretty much the entire plot is Arek needing to soul bond before his birthday, trying to woo his friends, & being deeply in love with his best friend.
  • Normally, the miscommunication (or rather, lack of communication) trope annoys me, but it worked well here -- I think partially due to the fact that Arek had a magical obligation to soul bond with someone and he was terrified of having any of his friends feel obligated to soul bond with him (which was very in character for Arek)
  • Such good supporting characters! They all got their own time to shine because of the "wooing" plotline. Each character was distinct and had a clear personality
  • The banter between Arek and Matt (the love interest) is *chef's kiss*. Matt uses "sire" as an insult throughout the whole book, which I loved every single time it happened. A really good execution of the friends-to-lovers trope.

Rep: Queer normative world, unlabeled queer identities, MLM, enby background character

I stand by my original description of this book when I started it: a chaotic DnD group after the quest, mixed with BBC Merlin, and it's a romcom. And it was FANTASTIC. I really enjoyed this as a fun fantasy read! I usually am not a fan of miscommunication and friends-to-lovers but it was done so well!?! I wish there was more character development and that we got to see things progress a bit more between Matt and Arek - but overall it's just such a fun read!
