This is the kind of story that needs to be put down for a bit. It is beautifully written, deeply personal, but oh so heavy! Despite family abuse, suffocating religious practices, and a separation from her brother, the main character is absolutely inspiring and so strong. It blows my mind that her parents sent their children away, how the mother was not a mother one bit, and the father was completely disconnected to the family. I have unresolved questions about the parents. The epilogue did bring some closure, but not all I was looking for. With that said, this will still be on my favorite books list!

Beautifully written. A must read for anyone who has a heart.

Oy, this one's heavy. Very dark, very upsetting, very valuable.

Heartwrenching and hearwarming all at the same time.
emotional informative reflective sad medium-paced

I lived and went to school in the same place 40ish years later. Incredibly illuminating and heart wrenching book even if you have no personal connection to the area.

I came for the local memior and stayed for the vivid retelling of the author's experience in Jesus Land. Legitimately made me weep.

This is a book that will stay with you.

I need a break from reading books that make me feel like I've been punched in the stomach repeatedly.

Tough story to read. Julia writes candidly about her experiences growing up in an abusive conservative Christian home with two adopted Black brothers. It was an engaging story, but challenging to read because of the tough experiences that the author shared.

My only criticism is that the book could have used a better editor, as it was peppered with typographical errors, which was distracting for me.

It's been a while since a book has made me feel so angry, or made me cry so much..and for getting that emotion out of me, I give it four stars.

Heartbreaking.
