After surviving a plane crash that killed every other passenger, including his family, twelve year-old Edward Adler has to learn how to cope with losing everything and starting completely over.

This is a coming of age story, but with total devastation as the backdrop. It really tugs at the heartstrings. Not only do we get to witness the blossoming relationship of Edward and his neighbor, we also learn about the lives of the other passengers on the plane. What a whirlwind of emotions.

“And it was possible that they were all crying a little.” Me too, Edward. Me too.

Really wanted to love this one, but in my opinion, it was pretty boring.  I wasn’t able to connect with or understand the characters and since the book wasn’t at all plot driven, that made it difficult to get through.

I enjoyed the ending, but if I hadn’t been reading this with a friend, I may not have stuck around long enough to figure that out. Felt cliche and I really only enjoyed reading every other chapter, which is set in an earlier time and place than the rest of the book.
