This book had an intriguing plot that kept me engaged throughout the story. The twists and turns were unexpected, and even though I was able to predict one part of the storyline early on, there were still many other aspects that came as a surprise.
Raker, the main character, was complex and captivating. He had his moments of charm, but at other times, he was a bit of a jerk. The book described one of the police officers as 5"9 and 10 stone, but Raker commented that she would never be considered petite. This is a common issue with male authors describing female characters, as it is often unrealistic. She'd be quite underweight with those stats.
The story was based on Raker being hired by a police officer who had runnings with him in the past. She needs to find her father, who had disappeared butt was explicitly told not to use police resources in her search. That's when she turned to Raker for help.
However, there were some concerns about the believability of the situation. It seemed unlikely that someone wouldn't use all available resources to find their father, especially if they were a police officer themselves. Moreover, Raker was a retired police officer, and I would think that they would take care of their own.
Despite these concerns, the book was still a great read, and I was eager to find out what happened next. Healy, another character in the series, didn't feature much in this book, which was a nice change from their constant bickering in previous books. However, Healy made an appearance at the end, setting up the next book perfectly.
Overall, this book was a quick, compelling read that kept me hooked until the end.

I have never come across this author before and picked this book off the book swap shelf at work not realising it is part of a series. But it stood well on its own and I didn't feel I'd missed anything in previous books. It had me gripped from the start, in fact it's been a long time since I've read a book this big so quickly. So why not five stars? I guess at times it felt a little too convenient that certain things fell into place at the right time and a little far fetched in places. Will definitely look out for more by this author.

Gained an extra star for the ending not my usual type of read and this book hasn’t convinced me to get into crime mysteries!
