Better than the movie (because the ending was more satisfactory in terms of well the nazi and the jew don’t just dance together , her leaving him is more on point ) but has the same flaws , first half was pretty good but it gets worse from there .

I decided to read this book after watching the film which was very interesting and emotional,  however it doesn't feel as good as the film.

The protagonist becomes a love sick puppy and the book becomes stagnant. It could have finished 100 pages earlier and from that point onwards it went from a love read to a hate read.

There was no hope, no happiness and it was almost like the author began to hate their own characters and wanted their demise.

Honestly this is one of those occasions where I think the movie is better than the book. I think Taika took this story in a better direction. I got to about 50% when I couldn't really stand listening to Johannes go on and on about Elsa and how he practically owned her. Just not my thing.

The movie, JoJo Rabbit, took the powerful first half of the book and created a thought provoking, brilliant piece of art. I found the book became cloying during the second half. The hope that the Betzler family personified disappeared as Johannes panics with the end of the war and creates a disturbing existence for himself. I skipped lots of paragraphs the second half as the “horse” was truly “beaten to death.”

Why aren't more people reading about this one??? Hopefully the movie will renew interest in it. While it has the slightest hints of The Collector, it is quite different in content. It is a perfect example of 'you reap what you sow', and I honestly had no idea where the book was going to go!

I enjoyed the book but I don't think I would recommend buying it based off enjoying watching JoJo Rabbit. I saw the movie first and really enjoyed it. The movie and book are very different.

An interesting, weird book. Don’t expect to like the main character and you’ll be just fine.
