A Humorous & Fanciful Verbal Sparring Match...
"When an Alpha Purrs" by Eve Langlais is a light hearted, sharp-tongued wit filled adventure in the land of city dwelling lion shifters. Complete with an over-the-top "king", pride alpha Arik, a vain, prideful, and beyond arrogant, alpha male. And his, equal in every way, human mate Kira, a human who gives verbal body slams as well as she receives them.
This tale, while fairly serious in its underlying tone, is hysterical and filled with intelligently written, razor sharp dialogue. It realistically portrays the fears and actions one might go through when dealing with a stalking, dangerous ex. And contains substantial characters offering up truthful reactions and heartfelt sentiments to the elements at hand.
Overall I found Langlais's take on the growly, shifter alpha archetype interesting and more playful than others I've read. It was a lovely, ebullient departure from the darker paranormal stories I typically seek.
However, for as joyous as I found the sarcastic banter. The feline play on words, humorous, at first. However, after a few chapters the constant inclusion of the extra "purrs", "meows", and excessive references to nap taking, including the inclusion of a human sized nap pillow, cheesy and unnecessary. For me the constant use of these silly quips actually diminished the caliber of the story being told, as well as, the writing itself. Writing, that for the most part I found intelligent and multifaceted.
I get it, it's a lighthearted story filled with humor, and some wonderfully delicious sarcasm. A story I found to be a refreshingly playful take on the typical brooding shifter stories. But, this one tipped a bit too far in the cheese direction for my liking, making me groan as much as it made me laugh.
Is it worth the read despite the cheese factor, yes, yes it is. You just have to enjoy it for what it is, an over the top, fanciful story of lions, and tigers, and wolves (oh my).

I love Arik!
This is not my first time reading this book, but I still completely loved it. Arik is my favorite Hero by this author. He’s funny and protective and sexy and… yeah. Lol. Kira was so so so stubborn (stupidly so in many cases), but she was pretty entertaining too. I’m definitely ready to dive into book 2!

Fun read
I struggled between a three and four star rating, and I wound up going with three because I felt the writing could use some improvements.
This book was a fun read. Definitely don’t go into it expecting high literature. Just sit back and enjoy the ride!

Eve Langlais is a bit of a hit and miss for me, because it requires the strong suspension of disbelief, and rolling with the tongue in cheek / over exaggerated nature of the plot. Sometimes it works, but it seems my last few attempts I wasn't in the right frame of mind to attempt it. This was one of those failed attempts.

Ich habe schon einiges von der Autorin gelesen. Mal war ich total begeistert, mal einfach gut unterhalten. Die Reihe könnte wieder so ein richtiger Hit für mich werden.
In diesem ersten Band lernen wir Arik, den Alpha näher kennen. Er ist ein reicher CEO und führt ein ganzen Löwenshifter-Rudel sowie die Shifter-Stadt in der auch andere Shifter leben, an.
Auch die Hauptcharaktere der folgenden zwei Bände lernt man bereits kennen, was ich immer sehr mag. Das Alpha-Beta-Omega Gefüge ist hier ein wenig anders als ich es kenne. Es wird zwar sehr deutlich, dass Arik der Anführer als Alpha ist, aber sein Beta hat ein ganz schön freches Mundwerk und verhält sich eher wie ein super Kumpel. Noch irritierter bin ich allerdings von dem extrem starken Omega. Da bin ich gespannt, wie es um diese Figur noch weiter geht. Aber jetzt wieder zu Arik. Er trifft auf Kira, eine menschliche Frau, die ihm gleich beim ersten Treffen seine für ihn so wichtige Mähne ruiniert. Anfänglicher Ärger entwickelt sich dann schnell zu einem eher neckischem Katz und Mausspiel. Ich fand es total witzig, dass er Kira auch oft Maus nennt und Anspielungen dazu macht. Anfangs weiß Kira nichts von Gestaltwandlern. Das findet sie erst später heraus.
Kira ist keine Prota, die sich die Butter vom Brot nehmen lässt, aber auch keine obercoole BadAss-Prota. Für mich also ideal. Neben der sich langsam entwickelnden Beziehung, gab es natürlich schon jede Menge körperliche Anziehung und daraus resultierende Szenen. Die nahmen aber nicht überhand und waren sehr gut geschrieben. Aber Kira ist auch in Gefahr und Arik versucht alles in seiner Macht stehende zu tun um sie zu beschützen. Sie sieht das nicht immer ein und begibt sich dadurch teilweise wieder in Schwierigkeiten, aber genau diese Art von Spannung und Unterhaltung mag ich in Büchern. Es war einfach nie langweilig und die Mischung aus Liebe/Erotik, Interaktionen mit Nebencharakteren, Spannung und Humor waren für mich einfach perfekt. Ich möchte unbedingt weiterlesen oder-hören. Da ich langsam von Audible weg und nur noch bei Bookbeat hören möchte, werde ich wohl zu den Büchern greifen müssen.
Die Hörbuchfassung kann ich aber total empfehlen. William G. Humphrey hat das ganze super angenehm gelesen. Er hat eine deutlich Aussprache ohne dabei künstlich zu wirken.

It is cute, some what fun with a bit of heat. Sadly it's missing in the romance and love department. I would have loved a bit more interaction and how Arik and Kira actually developed their relationship up to the L-word. It felt a bit rushed.

I dnf this in the first chapter. I know this kind of book is supposed to be cheesy and have questionable writing, but this was just dumb. This author usually is my first pick for a smooth, mindless read, but this one was just not it for me. I am going to skip on to the second and hope the male main character is better.
A lighthearted and fun read. This is the first black ok in a new series and I am looking forward to reading the next two books.
An alpha is always right. Right? Oh no, he learns the hard way with this female. She's spunky, sarcastic and thinks she knows what she wants in a man. Or does she?
