Darth Plagueis is a competently written expanded universe novel, but doesn't have much going for it other than a giant pile of Star Wars trivia. The moment-to-moment prose is excellent, and the premise is initially pretty compelling. Unfortunately little is done to humanize the baddies - both protagonists are selfish, scheming, murderous, and power-hungry. No attempt is made to illustrate why they developed those traits or why they continue to choose the dark side.

Furthermore, it feels like half the book is just references to the events and characters of other expanded universe novels. The intended reader is clearly either someone who has read every other EU novel or who will now buy and read those because they are curious about the vast network of ancillary events. If the book spent more time delving into the character and psychology of its leads then I could forgive the repeated hand-waving of off-screen events. Sadly, this book feels like just another brick in the Star Wars wall.

I'll be honest, I was bored as heck in the first section. I'm not really into the Sith, but once Palpatine was brought in I got hooked! After his introduction, things became very VERY interesting. There was quite a few cameos from common characters that we all know and some from Legends books that surprised me. Towards the last section the pace of the story moved quickly, but still managed to fill in the missing information for the Phantom Menace movie. Mr. Luceno is an intelligent and creative author who definitely took his time researching, in order to connect the plot with the canon movies. Highly recommend this for those into lore based stories.

It actually made me like the prequels a little more because it reveals a decades-long master plan. The political plots are hardly as exciting as the chess-like strategies they try to be. There are some good highlights like Palpatine's rise and Maul's backstory; but, the ending is very rushed as the author clears his slate of other interesting characters to make way for the canonical Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones plot lines.
