I liked this book a whole lot more than I expected to. I give it 4.5 stars specifically, the only reason why I didn’t give it 5 is because I felt a lack of energy in the last third or fourth of the book. But it was still so cute, funny and touching in many ways.

When I first saw that this book was coming out, I added it to my TBR and sat back to wait its arrival after being denied an ARC (we can't win them all).
I knew I was either going to absolutely adore this or hate it wholeheartedly as a Religious Studies major - I LOVED this book.
I laughed out loud, felt pain, and related to this book in so many ways.
Yes its heavy on religion (duh) but its also hilarious and brings up many issues that religions today are dealing with (or not). I really hope the author writes more books as this was only her first one and it was absolutely amazing.

This is one of those books that made me laugh and cry at the same time. It’s a fantastic story that really shows you what it’s like to be a teenager now. In many ways, this one of the best novels to capture how teens actually speak and engage with each other - calling out the BS they hear and questioning the world around them. I like how this book examines hypocrisy and religion and education, all through the relationships formed at St. Clare’s Catholic School.
Michael, our narrator, has transferred to St. Clare’s in the middle of his junior year - he’s not happy to be there since he a.) was told they wouldn’t move again until he was done with high school, and b.) is an atheist. On his first day, he’s awed by Lucy standing up to a nun and decides he must not be the only atheist in the school! Turns out Lucy wants to be a priest and is very Catholic. But, she does bring Michael into her group of friends, and their study group - Heretics Anonymous.
While everything is happening at school, Michael is struggling with his father not being around, Lucy is mothering her younger brothers, and their other friends are fighting their own battles at home. I love how the characters all came together to push and lift up their friends at the right time. And I love that they made mistakes. None of these characters are perfect and Michael really screws up. His journey to asking forgiveness is one of the best parts of the book.

Ultimately a good read, I like the story and the overall message. However. Major manic pixie dream girl vibes.. I think the book would have been about 1000x better from Lucy's point of view. I find the narrator to be a 2 dimensional douche bag and a kind of gross.
Oh my God this book was amazing. It includes a lot on religion but does it in a way that didn't make me feel uncomfortable and made me think.
Everything wrapped up super nicely!! I loved it very very much. I think it did a good job representing religion and the issues surrounding it. Funny cast of characters and a really cute romance.
