What I liked:
- The discussions about religions, and what it means to believe in something
- Its capacity to take and explain everyone's point of view without insulting or denying the others
- The main character, his integrity and yet his growth
- Sophia!

What I didn't like:
- The drama was very "teenager" (which makes absolute sense because guess what? they're teenagers, but since I'm not I felt everything was brought out of proportion)
- How some characters' actions are not acknowledged as mean, unfair, or hurting and are actually forgiven because "their god says so"

Katie Henry is one of my favorite authors, despite just having read two of her books. I love this story and it’s themes of forgiveness, frustration and love.

a fun story! I love the unique plot and setting, and how much Catholic Church history I learned from this YA fiction book. I’m excited to see what Katie Henry has in store for her upcoming book.

i loved this!! very relatable for me ugh omg i really did just love it. had me laughing from page 1 and tearing up a few times.

4/5

This book was utterly delightful. I read this as a break for my brain from fantasy and god all the classics I’ve had to read for school and boy did it deliver.

Michael’s narration was flawless and the humour in this book was actually perfect. It was sarcastic and kind of dark but also just really light-hearted and was one of the best things about this book.

I absolutely loved the band of characters represented in this book from their backgrounds and religious beliefs and just everything about them. From what I recall there was an aethiest, a Colombian catholic, a gay Jew, a Unitarian and a pagan? DIVERSITY FOLKS. No but all of the characters fitted so well in with eachother and I love how flawed they all were? Like Michael was lovable but he was an obnoxious and sometimes arrogant guy who tried and persisted to learn and do better. Lucy was first shown as a completely open minded person while remaining loyal to her faith but throughout the book, her views are challenged and how superior she subconsciously places herself and the double standards is questioned by Avi and Eden and that was a very very well written dynamic of the book. Avi while being kind of insanely overprotective, was snarky and honest and kinda confrontational and that was wonderful. Even eden and max who weren’t developed really provided such well needed entertainment and discussion to this book and that was wonderful.

Essentially, great book, fantastic and would read again if I feel that the romance was a tad bit forced.

I really loved this!

What an amazing way to start the year. One of the best books I've ever read.

3.5/5 stars, I really enjoyed this but another case of overhype makes me enjoy the book less than I thought.

Michael, an atheist, has been sent to a private Catholic school. His dad keeps getting promoted within his company, which has sent Michael and his family traveling across the country, and Michael has been promised that this is the last move. Michael ends up making friends with other "heretics" at his school: people who, for various reasons, do not fit the mold of a Catholic school student. They meet together as a sort of unofficial support group, until Michael challenges them to begin changing the system. Thus the group of heretics start fighting back against what they see as injustice at their school.

While Michael himself and his friend Lucy are both well-developed characters, we learn much less about the other members of HA, which is unfortunate. Watching them plan and fight back against their school with mixed results reminds me of Jennifer Mathieu's Moxie. The story is about the group of characters, but mostly it's about Michael and his relationship with his friends and also with his family. Michael's frustrations at being moved across country on the whims of his parents will ring true to teens who have had to move in the middle of a school year. I was impressed by the inclusion of an atheist character, as this is a rare occurrence in teen contemporary literature.

Recommended for: teens
Red Flags: language; underage drinking;
Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Edelweiss for the purposes of review.
