The concept is a lovely fairytale, but there are problems with the storytelling. The introduction is very long, then when things should fold out, we only get brief descriptions of the events. I think the whole book should have been longer and as detailed as the introduction was.
The movie makers made two major changes in the adaptation. The thunder collecting flying pirates part became much longer, more memorable and more important to the story. I think that was a great idea, it gave time for the characters and the romance to show themselves, thus solved my problem with the book.
The other change is the ending. It is less cathartic, less happy in the book and I like it that way.
So great concept, not that great execution but the ending saved it for me.

Well I have to say that this was a bit disappointing, given that Neil Gaiman is my favourite author and this is a kind of dark fantasy story this seemed to be right up my alley and I was having high hopes for this one.
I'm struggling to rate this has a good book because I really can't find anything that bumps it up a notch to be considered a good book: to me it was a very meh/okay book. I liked reading it, I still love Gaiman's writing, I liked the premisses and what happened but, I don't know, I feel like it need some else. Maybe a bit more action? Something more to spice it up the same way American Gods is spiced. I was expecting this dark, somber devious ambient in a fairytale and really it's just a fantasy story with some sex and violence here and there and everything ended so quickly and predictably. Maybe I needed this novel to be a bit bigger? I feel like it had so much potencial and left much to wish for.
Obviously I also need to manage my expectations a bit better because I think I keep expecting to be mindblown and that doesn't always happen. This is not a bad book at all but hopes are a bitch!

Gaiman's prose can be absolutely delightful at times, but I have to admit (though it pains me) that I enjoyed the movie more!

Despite my best efforts, I found myself reading this against the movie. I absolutely love the movie, and I've had mixed luck with Neil Gaiman, so the odds were stacked against this book. I listened to the audiobook, which I think helped. Neil Gaiman reads as though he's telling you a fairy tale that has been passed down from oral tradition. The fairy tale style of this book is what ended up saving it, in my opinion. I have long thought that the worlds and magic that Gaiman creates are wonderful, but that the characters fall flat. The same was true for this book, but, like I said, the fact that it reads like a fairy tale and not a work of fiction where the characters are meant to be paramount ultimately helps this book. If it were another subgenre of fantasy, I would have liked it a lot less.
Far removed from what I’d normally read. Enjoyed the narration; it was a ‘nice’ read but not one that’s got me clamouring to read more from the author or this genre. If you’re yet to read the book or watch the film, read the book first.
