It’s not hard to own something. Or everything. You just have to know that it’s yours, and then be willing to let it go.
I have a sneaky feeling that perhaps I wouldn’t have enjoyed this book as much if I hadn’t seen the (absolutely perfect) movie adaptation first. But I enjoyed it a lot nonetheless, so there ya go

This is just absolute perfection. A masterclass in whimsical writing with a touch of darkness. Every character, whether it be a main one or a side one, is interesting and captivating. Great pace and the lack of details in some areas actually work? 12/10, no notes.

Oh, this book was so wonderful! I was worried at the beginning, but I'm glad I got proven wrong. While I miss some of the more intimate details of the movie, this was also a good story with a pleasant narrative.
I've read this before so I don't know why it wasn't listed as Read already, but anyway I just listened to the audiobook as read by Neil Gaiman himself and he is a magnificent narrator and also my favorite human so yeah. I was really feeling like reading a fairytale for grownups which is exactly what this is so I decided to revisit it and went with the audiobook since Neil Gaiman has a fantastic reading voice and yeah. It was probably even more magical than I remember it from reading myself years ago so I'm really loving audiobooks this year.
The story was fantastic but the best part of this book (for me) was the entry by Gaiman after the actual story. He talks about what led him into writing and shared his take in fairy tales. I've never "highlighted" and "noted" so much - ever! Just wonderful!
Listened to the book on audio. The story is a sweet fairy tale type of book with lots of adventure and death and witches and bad guys, and some gruesomeness. The story itself is a 3.5-3.75 but as usual, listening to Neil Gaiman read it knocks it up a star to about a 4.5, so I averaged it out to a 4. I will probably listen to all books by Neil Gaiman rather than read now that I've discovered his audio books. He just makes it so much lovelier to listen to. There is a movie to this and when I read the description I thought, hmmm that sounds familiar, and realized I'd seen the movie. It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure there are some differences in the ending.
