Gaiman's ability to weave such an incredible tale is absolutely breathtaking. This being my first Gaiman novel, I was in no way disappointed. This tale of adventure left me wanting so much more after I finished the final page. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking for a fairy tale-esque fantasy.

What is a fairytale? It is a story in which transformation takes place and a lesson is learned along the way. It is part adventure. Part Romance. It is a tale that makes the reader think. It is layered and complex, yet the narrative is simple.
Take a character, a naïve young boy or girl, send them on a quest. Make it perilous in nature. Arm them with little knowledge, questionable intentions, and a good heart. Along the way he or she will encounter many characters who will aid or deter, imparting knowledge in the process. Teaching our character through companionship or strife. In the end, the character will find that the journey has changed their perceptions of life and likely the goal of their quest. Not all end happy, some end in tragedy, but all end with the character being irrevocably changed forever.
That is what this story is. It is told in a way that only Neil Gaiman can, with a quirky third person narrative and eccentric characters. Bonus points for narrating his books on audio and adding that extra level of immersion to them. He brings the characters alive in ways seldom seen.
This book is full of gorgeous prose and an enthralling story, but it is also, at times, a challenge to read because of these same things. His literary voice is an acquired taste and even though I consider Gaiman to be my all-time favorite author, even I struggled in parts giving this the attention and focus it deserved. The first 10-15% I was struggling to get into, but the latter bits I began to flow with the cadence and I found that I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This book comes highly recommended for those who vibe with Gaiman's writing and for those who love fairytales. For any reader who is looking to read a Gaiman novel, I would recommend starting with the Graveyard Book, and this before taking on something like American Gods or Neverwhere. It is short and illustrious and so very fun to read.
