I really debated on whether to give this 2 or 3 stars. I really hated the first 3/4 or so but because it’s so short I pushed through and finished it. I remember reading it in my French Lit class and struggling to follow it. Now I know why, it was hard enough to follow in English let alone a foreign language. Very odd writing style yet basically the diary of Arthur Meursault who at first comes across as a lazy, apathetic piece of shit but turns out to be a psychopath/schizophrenic.

Didn't immediately get the meaning. I.e. not sure what I'm supposed to take away from it. Yes, I understand the idea of the absurd and the existentialist, even nihilist, notions of the main character. Yet, is the book trying to perpetuate the ideas of nothingness and nothing matters? Or are we supposed to find fault in it and search for meaning of life. I expect that Meursault's indifference to life is unrelatable to most; i.e. most of us will react in the same way the other characters in the book do. But Meursault himself does not come to some grand conclusion about reasons to live. Instead, he succumbs to the supposed meaninglessness of his life and the inevitably of death.
