This book was well paced with a well-considered message about social issues like corporate landlords, the demonisation of immigrants, and the threat of adaptive illnesses. I enjoyed the reading experience, but for a horror novel found it pretty much devoid of any scares.

While there were some moments of body horror and gore, ultimately I felt very few thrills as I made my way through the book. It was an easy read, but not one that ever made me feel I couldn't read it in the dark.

This was just okay for me.

I think the reason I don’t tend to read spooky books set in modern times is because I just can’t suspend disbelief like that. A story like this would work on film for me but less so in books.

I liked the premise but ultimately, I found the writing style a bit detached and flat.

The book is very very good, particularly the parts about the Serbian family, whom I thought Brogden portrayed with accuracy surprising for a foreign author. The story is great, even if not overly original. The stile is flowy and well-pased. The only reason I gave it 4 not 5 stars is because well, I'd have to spoil but let me just say I'm not a big fan of works where too much is suddenly thrown together in the way of happening.
